Wouter Torringa
is an improvising violinist and violist, composer, and interdisciplinary artist who leads various projects and ensembles.
After completing his Bachelor’s degree at the HKU Utrechts Conservatorium, where he focused on improvisation and composition under the guidance of George Dumitriu, he began a Master of Music at the Conservatorium of Oslo.
Wouter operates in a space between free improvisation, jazz, and classical music. In his work, he explores themes such as beauty and nature, as well as destruction, anger, and hopelessness. Driven by these contradictions, he pushes his artistic boundaries and enjoys being on or beyond the edge of the well-known.
He aims to create a space with his music where people can participate in a full experience, a place to be touched and confronted. Wouter combines his music with visual art and movement, and he enjoys working site-specific to draw inspiration from the space and compose in response to it.
Woodcraft has taken, and continues to take, an important place in Wouter’s artistic practice; A place to be inspired and surprised, a space to learn from one another, and to come home through each other’s music.
